Nursing and Midwifery Transformation

Empowering nurses and midwives to deliver quality assured genomic services

Nursing and Midwifery Transformation

Genomics in Nursing and Midwifery

Rapid advances in the field of genomics are affecting nearly all areas of healthcare. This is why genomics is becoming fundamental to the practice of all nurses and midwives, regardless of their speciality, and is now included in the NMC standards of proficiency for registered nurses and NMC standards of proficiency for midwives.

Bringing genomics to every-day care will help the NHS deliver better outcomes for patients including faster and more accurate diagnoses, personalised treatment, and prevention through early detection. Nurses and midwives are already playing a vital role in embedding genomics into routine care, and will continue to do so in the future.

The North Thames GMS are working to support nurses and midwives in our region to enable them to deliver quality assured genomic services.

We are doing this by;

  • Supporting nurses and midwives to develop their knowledge and skills in genomics, build their confidence and capability to lead, deliver and co-ordinate genomic practice in everyday care.
  • Working with nursing and midwifery leaders to develop and improve selected care pathways for cancers, rare diseases, and specific areas of midwifery practice to increase equity of access to genomic services and/or reduce unwarranted variation.
  • Ensuring the voices of nurses and midwives feed into the overarching approach to genomics in our region through our leadership team, to ensure a multidisciplinary and sustainable approach is taken.

Our work is guided by the national nursing and midwifery transformation project, led by NHS North East and Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service Alliance. To find out more visit: https://ney-genomics.org.uk/our-work/national-nursing-and-midwifery-genomics-transformation-project/

Education and Training opportunities in the North Thames

We deliver resources and educational sessions for pharmacists and pharmacy colleges in our region.

The National Programme is working collaboratively with Health Education England’s Genomics Education Programme (HEE-GEP) and the nursing and midwifery team within the Genomics Unit at NHS England (GU-NHSE) to deliver sustainable transformation. You can view HEE’s resources for nurses and midwives;

Care pathways in focus

For 2022-2024, the following pathways are being reviewed by the national nursing and midwifery transformation project, with an emphasis on training & education to enable genomic conversations across key touchpoints;

  • Cancer – lung, colorectal, breast and ovarian
  • Rare Disease – inherited epilepsy and polycystic kidney disease
  • Feto Maternal

Each regional GMSA is leading on the development of one of these pathways, and will support the roll-out of all pathways across their region.

In the North Thames we are leading the colorectal cancer pathway– find out more about nursing and midwifery projects in our region using the menu below;
